Travel, Stay, and Key Information
Venue
Our wedding will take place at Hacienda de los Morales, a property steeped in centuries of Mexican history. While it serves today as a fine dining restaurant and events space, Hacienda has its roots in the 16th century, and its colonial-style structures date back as far as 1647. We are thrilled to share our special day with you at this beautiful estate that embodies Mexico’s enduring cultural richness.
We strongly encourage guests to reserve within our hotel block at the Hyatt Regency Mexico City. The group rate we’ve arranged for Friday through Monday (9 to 12 October) is less than half the Hyatt's standard rates and far below those of all other major hotels in the area. The Hyatt is less than 15 minutes from Hacienda de los Morales and is very conveniently located for exploring all Polanco has to offer. It will also be within a short drive to the after-party restaurant (details to follow). Reservations can be made using the link at the bottom of this section.
If you wish to extend your stay in Mexico City, we recommend staying for those dates in hotels or homestays slightly to the west, such as Roma, La Condesa, Juarez, or El Centro Histórico. These will offer much lower rates and excellent access to museums, restaurants, and more.
Hotel
Location
The wedding venue and hotel are each in Polanco, one of Mexico City’s trendiest neighborhoods. Polanco is approximately eight miles (~40 to 60 minutes) from Mexico City International Airport. Major attractions in and near Polanco include beautiful parks (Bosque de Chapultepec, Parque Lincoln), internationally acclaimed museums (Museo Nacional de Antropología, Museo Soumaya, Acuario Inbursa), luxury shopping (especially along Avenida Presidente Masaryk), and numerous fine dining restaurants (including the Michelin-starred Pujol and Quintonil).
Safety
It’s natural for international visitors to worry about their safety in Mexico, based on media reports and cartel-linked violence in many parts of the country. However, Mexico City’s crime rates are generally comparable to, or lower than, those of major US cities. While property and violent crimes occur in any city, the Polanco neighborhood in particular is extremely safe by US standards. This highly international, modern, and affluent area is well patrolled by police and private security guards.
We advise guests to take normal precautions, including using rideshare services, being mindful of personal belongings, and exercising situational awareness. By applying basic common sense, we are confident you’ll both feel and be safe throughout your stay.
Altitude
At about 7,300 feet above sea level, Mexico City is one the highest capitals in the world. By comparison, Denver is roughly 2,000 feet lower.
Many first-time visitors to Mexico City experience symptoms of altitude sickness for a day or two, such as headaches, shortness of breath, fatigue, and loss of appetite. People of all ages and levels of physical fitness can suffer from altitude sickness.
While the altitude is nothing to fear, we encourage first-timers to consider taking the following steps during your first couple days in the city to ensure you feel your best throughout your stay.
Stay well hydrated.
Eat regular meals, even if you feel you’ve lost your appetite.
Get plenty of rest.
Limit alcohol use.
Use over-the-counter pain relievers, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), acetaminophen/paracetamol (Tylenol), or naproxen (Aleve). You can find these at Amado, the pastry shop/convenience store conveniently located in the Hyatt’s lobby. Elsewhere in Polanco, you can find these at Oxxo convenience stores and pharmacies (e.g., Farmacias Similares, Farmacias La Generosa Polanco).
Traffic
Mexico City has significant traffic, which is generally heaviest during the rush hour periods of 7-10 am and 4-8 pm. Fridays are particularly busy. Travel from Mexico City International Airport to Polanco typically takes 40 to 60 minutes.
Even relatively short trips can take longer than you might expect, so allow for plenty of extra time to get from place to place.
Transportation
For foreign visitors, driving in Mexico City is generally more trouble than it’s worth. Traffic is heavy, parking is limited, and driving norms can feel unfamiliar. Unless you have driven in Mexico in the past and plan to travel long distances in and around the city, we strongly recommend against renting a car.
Traditional taxis are your best option for traveling from the airport to your hotel. At the airport, rideshare services are prohibited from picking up passengers directly outside the terminals. Rideshare apps will allow you to place a pin there, and this often works. However, drivers may have their cars impounded if they are caught picking up passengers outside areas designated for rideshare, which are a 10-15 minute walk from the terminals.
Outside the airport and for your return to the airport, rideshare services are by far the easiest and most reliable way to get around. Taxis typically charge more, may not accept credit cards, and may not carry enough change for large-denomination payments. Uber is widely used and very dependable. We also recommend downloading DiDi, a very popular rideshare app that often offers cheaper fares.
As in the US, all drivers receive background checks and should never ask you to pay outside the app. When you enter an Uber or DiDi rideshare car, be prepared to show or tell your driver the four-digit PIN displayed in the app. The trip cannot begin without the PIN, which is designed for your safety and the driver's.
Drinking Water
To ensure you feel your best on our wedding day, we strongly recommend that international visitors not drink tap water in Mexico City. The city’s water contains bacteria that can cause digestive distress for those who are not accustomed to it. Luckily, tap water is very easy to avoid. Bottled water is inexpensive and readily available at convenience stores, including Oxxo, 7-Eleven, and Circle K. Also, you can safely drink tap water in your room at any major hotel, since it is filtered.
As in many countries, water typically is not offered free of charge at restaurants. Instead, you can order bottled water (una botella de agua). Bottles of sparkling/mineral water (agua mineral) are almost universally available, too. Ice and aguas frescas (diluted fruit juices) will be made from bottled or filtered water at formal restaurants, but be aware that they may be made with tap water at casual ones.
